Practice Leader -Health Information Management- Cancer Registrar

Incumbent is responsible for ensuring Kaiser Permanente Southern California meets mandatory State requirements for reporting of cancer cases, including data quality and submission timeliness. Actively monitors changes to requirements and modifies existing work processes to maintain compliance. Manages exempt and represented employees responsible for data collection, submission and reporting. Partners with KPSC clinical and research leaders to promote use of Cancer Registry data to improve quality of care. Partners with Labor representatives and LMP in managing work processes.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for ensuring Kaiser Permanente Southern California meets mandatory State requirements for reporting of cancer cases.
  • Partners with California State Cancer Registry and regional cancer surveillance programs to ensure timely submission of high quality data.
  • Manages represented and exempt staff, oversees work processes and distribution of work to ensure State timeliness standards are met, and provides training to ensure staff remain up to date on registry reporting requirements.
  • Participates actively in state and national Cancer Registry organizations to stay up to date on changes in cancer registry requirements and represent KPSC.
  • Responsible for ensuring efficient use of resources, including developing plans to streamline and increase automation when appropriate. Stays abreast of health information technology changes and develops plans to ensure KPSC will meet changing requirements.
  • Partners with KPSC regional clinical leaders and Research to use Cancer Registry data to support monitoring and improvement of cancer care and research into cancer treatment and care delivery; helps design reports and analyses.
  • Partners with Labor representatives and LMP.
  • Maintains relationship with approved educational programs in order to recruit qualified registry staff.
  • Enhances visibility of cancer registry department by collaborating with regional and medical center stakeholders.

    Qualifications: Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum ten (10) years experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar or Registered Health Information Technician/Administrator.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in management.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience supporting information needs for quality improvement initiatives.
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Completion of accredited Certified Tumor Registry training program or Registered Health Information Administrator program.
    License, Certification, Registration
  • Certified Tumor Registrar or Registered Health Information Administrator.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Cancer Reporting in California, Volume One, Collaborative Staging, TNM staging and SEER summary staging.

  • Master's degree
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Health Information Management or Informatics preferred.
